TEAM BACKGROUND

Denise grew up in East Side San Jose, California, surrounded by immigrants, who shaped her understanding of the US as a nation of immigrants who bring ambitious energy, new ideas and a wide variety of perspectives and experiences that enrich us all.

Years later, while doing graduate work in Central America, she was confronted with the very real suffering driving migration such as persecution, violence, war, and extreme poverty.  And yet, at the same time, there are few legal options for them to immigrate to the United States. For asylum seekers, the situation is particularly dire.

Volunteer work both at the border and in the Aurora Detention Center helped her understand the need and develop a service model that would effectively assist asylum seekers as they pursue their petitions in Immigration Court. CHAN was created to assist them with what they needed most - a stable living situation, mentorship, and access to legal services.

Founder and Executive Director

Allison’s responsibilities as CHAN’s director of community engagement include representing CHAN through:

  • social media

  • community events

  • relationships with CHAN partners at the local and state levels

  • visiting client families, which is a favorite part of my job

Recruiting volunteers or serving as a volunteer is woven into the fabric of her career and personal life.

  • United States Peace Corps in Central America

  • Immigrant Center in Massachusetts

  • Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network (RMIAN) & Casa de Paz in Colorado

  • Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in Texas

  • Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Texas & Colorado to advocate for detained asylum seekers.

This has helped equip her for working with volunteers and clients for CHAN.

Allison is fluent in Spanish and has taught it at multiple school levels as well as started her own business, A-game Communications, which offers high-level bilingual language services.

Because of the examples of her immigrant ancestors' hard work, she is proud to be the first woman in her family to go to graduate school and the first person to earn a Ph.D. Of all of Allison’s achievements, she is happiest to have won the Excellence in Teaching Award and the Best Should Teach Silver Award during her tenure in the Spanish and Portuguese department at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

Director of Community Engagement

Jan Williams has been serving on the Board of Directors for Colorado Hosting Asylum Network, (CHAN) since 2020, shortly after CHAN was first formed. She has been involved with the nonprofit world since 1983, when she was one of three founders of a nonprofit health clinic, Inner City Health, (ICH) which provides medical, dental, and counseling care for the low-income and uninsured populations in metropolitan Denver.

Jan has served on numerous nonprofit boards, locally and nationally. Her love for the nonprofit world was also evident as she worked with Mile High Ministries from 2001 –2003 to assist in creating a transitional housing program at Joshua Station for homeless families in Denver.

On a personal level, Jan has been married to Bob Williams since 1962 and is the proud Mother of three wonderful children, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren that help keep her excited about life! She continues to take classes in many different issues and loves playing pickleball.

Vice Director & Board Member

After earning her Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education, and Masters in Curriculum and Instruction, Tomi thoroughly enjoyed her career as an educator in Colorado for 33 years.  As that phase of her life was coming to an end, a new door opened for Tomi which gave her the opportunity to help resettle asylum seekers in Colorado. Working for CHAN Tomi is able to leverage her skills in technology to help maintain our information systems, help create teams of volunteers, and seek resources to meet the needs of our clients.  Tomi's greatest joy in this position is working with the volunteer members of our teams and our client families as we all learn daily about immigration, its challenges, and the amazing hearts of the Colorado community.

Margie joined the Colorado Hosting Asylum Network (CHAN) in 2023. She is a retired CPA, having worked in various financial services roles since 1988. Earlier in life, Margie was an elementary school teacher. Margie’s retirement is focused on family, volunteering and providing housing to fellow Coloradans as a landlord. She is devoted to using her experience in finance to support recent arrivals to our community.

Margie highly values volunteer service, which has been a large part of her life. She has worked in taxpayer assistance for the U.S. Embassy in Caracas, Venezuela; taught for Junior Achievement; served on the board of a local, private foundation; and led student activities at her son’s schools, such as Imagination Destination and the Science Fair. Margie’s observations from having lived and worked in South America motivate her work for CHAN here in the United States,

Margie has a son and daughter-in-law and a new grandbaby in Colorado. She divides her time between Lakewood and Colorado Springs, Colorado.
